The "First Child", Rei is 14 and a very quiet girl. She was in training for 7 months to finally synchronize with her Eva Unit-00. All records of her were erased so no one knows where she came from. Not only is Rei quiet, but she also can't express her feelings to others well. She's usually always alone. Her only friends seem to be Shinji and Asuka. She was severely injured during a test with Eva Unit-00 when it went berserk. Eva Unit-00 had ejected the entry plug where the pilots are and Rei came crashing down in the entry plug. Shinji's father, Gendo, quickly ran to the entry plug and opened the super-heated hatch with his bare hands. Ever since then, Rei has been treating Gendo like her own father. She would show her smile to him and be able to communicate with him more than others. She lives in an apartment by herself. The building is very dirty and it's surrounded with noise. Her apartment looks old, dirty, and the mail is never to be read.
Rei isn't human....she's a clone of Shinji's mother, Yui. Rei has several other "bodies" in Central Dogma. Her other bodies are empty and used as the "Dummy Plugs" or as spare bodies for Rei when she's hurt or injured badly beyond help. It seems they can transfer her soul into another "body" of Rei just in case that happens. What's also strange is that Rei has some characteristics of angels.  This is because her soul may be derived from Lilith. She has red eyes and can generate an AT Field. Kaworu did say
"You are like me" to Rei. But it has never been said if it meant. Ritsuko describes Rei as "Not adepted to living."
